Havildar Mohd Iqbal killed in Nagaland IED Blast: Full timeline, final tribute and investigation update

Havildar Mohd Iqbal of 28 Assam Rifles made the supreme sacrifice after a suspected improvised explosive device struck an Assam Rifles vehicle in Nagaland’s Chümoukedima district on 13 July 2026.

Four other Assam Rifles personnel and a civilian were injured in the explosion. The four injured personnel, including an Assistant Commandant, were subsequently reported stable and out of danger.

Havildar Iqbal was later accorded full military honours in Nagaland before his mortal remains were taken to his native village in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir. His final farewell drew Army personnel, relatives and local residents who gathered to honour his service and sacrifice.

Important clarification: Investigators have not publicly identified the individuals or organisation responsible for the blast. No group should be named as responsible without an official finding.

What happened in Chümoukedima?

At around 2 pm on 13 July, an Assam Rifles Mahindra pickup carrying personnel of 28 Assam Rifles was travelling along the Chümoukedima (A) village–Shokhuvi road when a suspected IED exploded.

Havildar Mohd Iqbal was driving the vehicle and lost his life in the blast. Four other Assam Rifles personnel sustained injuries. A civilian was also injured, while an autorickshaw caught in the explosion was reportedly destroyed.

Security forces and police secured the area after the incident. Search operations were intensified, while forensic teams began examining the damaged vehicle, explosive residue and other physical evidence recovered from the site.

Where exactly did the blast occur?

Several initial reports described the site as Shokhuvi or an area near Shokhuvi.

The Shokhuvi Village Council later clarified that the actual blast location falls within the jurisdiction of Chümoukedima (A) village, although the incident occurred on the road leading towards Shokhuvi.

The most accurate description is:

The blast occurred on the Chümoukedima (A) village–Shokhuvi road, within Chümoukedima (A) village jurisdiction.

This correction matters because inaccurate location details were repeated widely during the first hours after the incident.

Who was Havildar Mohd Iqbal?

Havildar Mohd Iqbal, aged 44, served with 28 Assam Rifles and was posted at the Assam Rifles Training Centre and School near Shokhuvi. He belonged to Kallar Mohra village in the Mendhar area of Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir.

Family-linked reports said that he had recently returned to duty after spending leave at home. He leaves behind a family that now remembers him not only as a soldier, but also as a husband and father whose service kept him far from home.

His son, Fasal Iqbal, later said that the family was proud of his father’s sacrifice and expressed his determination to join the Armed Forces and serve the country.

Assam Rifles pays tribute in Dimapur

A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Assam Rifles Training Centre and School in Dimapur on 14 July.

Senior officers from the Army and Assam Rifles attended the ceremony, including Director General Assam Rifles Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera. Havildar Iqbal’s coffin was draped in the Tricolour as personnel paid tribute to him with full military honours.

The Director General Assam Rifles said that necessary steps would be taken to protect security while appealing to the people not to allow the incident to disturb Nagaland’s hard-earned peace.

He also confirmed that the four injured Assam Rifles personnel were stable and out of danger.

Final farewell in Poonch

Havildar Iqbal’s mortal remains reached Kallar Mohra in Poonch on 15 July.

Army personnel, relatives and residents gathered to pay their respects, and he was laid to rest with full military honours. His son’s decision to pursue a career in the Armed Forces became one of the most emotional moments associated with the final farewell.

The family’s loss is deeply personal. At the same time, the farewell reflected the respect given to a soldier who lost his life while performing his duty.

What is the latest investigation update?

The investigation expanded after forensic specialists from the National Security Guard, National Investigation Agency and Nagaland Police joined the post-blast examination.

Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma said NSG assistance had been requested because of its specialised expertise in post-blast investigation. Teams were collecting and analysing evidence to determine how the device was prepared, planted and triggered.

Investigators have reportedly been examining:

  • fragments and explosive residue recovered from the site;
  • the damaged Assam Rifles vehicle;
  • batteries, wires and other possible IED components;
  • movement of suspicious vehicles and individuals;
  • local CCTV or other available footage;
  • and information provided by residents and shopkeepers.

The DGP also appealed to the public to report suspicious activity or recent enquiries regarding materials that may have been used to construct the explosive device.

Has the NIA formally taken over the case?

NIA specialists have participated in the joint investigation, but their involvement should not automatically be described as a formal takeover.

According to the available update, the state government was considering whether the case should be handed over to a central agency after receiving the forensic findings. No formal transfer had been publicly confirmed at that stage.

The accurate wording is:

NSG, NIA and Nagaland Police experts have joined the post-blast investigation. A formal NIA takeover has not yet been publicly confirmed.

Has any organisation claimed responsibility?

No organisation had claimed responsibility in the latest reports examined.

Security officials also cautioned against speculation. Nagaland’s DGP said investigators would be guided by physical and forensic evidence rather than unsupported claims.

Until investigators announce a conclusion, the article should use terms such as:

  • suspected IED blast;
  • unidentified attackers;
  • investigation under way; and
  • responsibility not yet established.

It would be inaccurate to label any organisation as responsible merely because it operates in the region or has been mentioned on social media.

Confirmed facts

The following details are supported by official statements or consistent reporting:

  • Havildar Mohd Iqbal served with 28 Assam Rifles.
  • The blast occurred on 13 July 2026.
  • He was driving the Assam Rifles vehicle.
  • Four Assam Rifles personnel were injured.
  • A civilian was also injured.
  • The injured personnel were later reported stable.
  • NSG, NIA and Nagaland Police specialists joined the investigation.
  • Havildar Iqbal received full military honours.
  • His mortal remains were taken to his native village in Poonch.
What remains unanswered?

Investigators still need to establish:

  • who planted the explosive device;
  • when and how it was placed;
  • how it was triggered;
  • whether the Assam Rifles vehicle was specifically tracked;
  • the motive behind the attack;
  • whether anyone provided local logistical support;
  • whether arrests or recoveries will follow;
  • and whether the case will be formally transferred to the NIA.

These questions should remain clearly separated from confirmed facts.

Why is the incident significant?

The attack occurred near an important Assam Rifles establishment and targeted personnel moving through an area where peace and stability have required years of effort.

Such incidents can create fear and encourage misinformation before investigators understand what actually happened. Responsible reporting is therefore essential.

The incident is important for three reasons:

First, a soldier lost his life and five other people were injured.

Second, the blast raises serious questions about local surveillance, movement security and the ability of attackers to place an explosive device near a security establishment.

Third, inaccurate allegations could disturb the wider peace in Nagaland. That is why officials and local organisations have appealed for restraint, cooperation and evidence-based investigation.

Support for the injured and bereaved family

Public reporting has focused mainly on the attack, investigation and funeral. Detailed information about compensation, insurance, service benefits or other financial assistance for Havildar Iqbal’s family has not yet been publicly disclosed.

No monetary figure should be published until it is confirmed by Assam Rifles, the competent government authority or the family.

The family may require institutional support concerning:

  • service-related death benefits;
  • insurance and compensation;
  • education support for dependants;
  • family pension;
  • pending salary and allowances;
  • documentation and claims assistance; and
  • long-term welfare support.

These are important welfare questions for follow-up reporting, but they should not be answered through assumptions.

Present status as of 16 July 2026
  • Havildar Mohd Iqbal has been laid to rest with full military honours.
  • Four injured Assam Rifles personnel were reported stable.
  • A civilian was also reported injured.
  • NSG, NIA and Nagaland Police experts are examining evidence.
  • Search and security operations have been intensified.
  • No organisation has been officially identified as responsible.
  • A formal NIA takeover had not been publicly confirmed.
Final takeaway

Havildar Mohd Iqbal’s final journey from Nagaland to Poonch reflects the personal cost carried by military families when a soldier loses his life in the line of duty.

The most meaningful tribute now is to ensure that:

  • the investigation remains professional and evidence-based;
  • those responsible are identified and brought to justice;
  • the injured personnel receive complete medical and institutional support;
  • and Havildar Iqbal’s family receives every entitled welfare benefit without unnecessary delay.

Until the investigation is completed, verified facts must remain stronger than speculation.
