The Union Cabinet has approved an important change to the Agnipath Scheme, allowing Agniveers who are not selected for regular military service after four years to continue serving for another two years.
According to the Ministry of Defence’s official announcement dated 4 November 2026, 25% of Agniveers will continue to be selected for regular service based on merit. The remaining 75% will be offered an additional two-year engagement period, depending on their willingness.
The Government has also confirmed higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits during the additional engagement.
The decision creates another opportunity for Agniveers to seek regular enrolment in the Armed Forces after completing six years of service, subject to the prescribed selection criteria.
The Cabinet approved this change following recommendations from the Indian Defence Forces and a review of the Agnipath Scheme’s performance.
What changes after four years of Agniveer Service?
Under the earlier arrangement, up to 25% of each Agniveer batch could be selected for regular service. The remaining Agniveers were expected to leave after completing their four-year engagement.
The revised arrangement introduces another option.
The additional two years are an option, not a compulsory extension for every Agniveer.
What happens to the 25% and 75% Agniveers?
The Government has retained the existing merit-based selection of 25% for regular military service after the initial four years.
The remaining 75% will have the option to continue for another two years under a second engagement period.
For example, consider a batch of 100 Agniveers.
After four years, 25 would be selected for regular service on merit. The remaining 75 would be offered the additional engagement opportunity.
This does not mean all 75 must accept the offer. Their continuation depends on their willingness and the applicable engagement conditions.
Can Agniveers become regular soldiers after six years?
Yes. The official announcement provides another opportunity for regular enrolment after completion of the second engagement period.
However, regular selection is not automatic.
Agniveers seeking regular service after six years must satisfy two conditions:
They must be willing to join the regular Armed Forces.
They must meet the prescribed objective selection criteria.
The Government has not yet provided complete details of the selection process, including any applicable medical, physical, performance or vacancy-related requirements.
Therefore, the Cabinet’s decision should be understood as an additional pathway to regular service, not a guarantee that every Agniveer will receive permanent appointment.
Agniveer salary in the 5th and 6th years: How much will increase?
One of the most important parts of the announcement concerns the financial benefits available during the extended engagement.
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that Agniveers serving the additional two years will receive higher remuneration.
These amounts must be established through detailed Government or service-specific instructions.
Any salary figures circulating without an official supporting notification should be treated as unverified.
Will Agniveer Seva Nidhi increase after six years?
The Government has confirmed an enhanced Seva Nidhi package for the second engagement period.
Seva Nidhi is an important financial benefit associated with the Agnipath Scheme.
However, the latest announcement does not provide the revised final Seva Nidhi amount after six years.
It also does not explain the exact additional contributions or the final calculation.
Agniveers should wait for the detailed financial instructions before assuming any specific lump-sum payment.
Will Agniveers receive seniority benefits?
Yes. Seniority benefits are specifically mentioned in the official Cabinet announcement.
This is relevant because the additional two-year engagement creates questions about the recognition of continued service.
However, the Government has not yet explained how these seniority benefits will be calculated or applied.
The detailed conditions will be important for understanding their effect on future regular service.
Can Agniveers marry during the two-year extension?
Under the existing four-year Agniveer engagement, marriage restrictions form part of the applicable service conditions.
The new Cabinet announcement does not clarify whether these restrictions will continue or change during the fifth and sixth years.
Therefore, marriage permission during the extended engagement remains an unanswered question in the 4 November press release.
The final position will depend on the detailed Terms of Engagement issued by the concerned authorities.
It would be incorrect to claim that marriage has already been permitted under the new extension arrangement.
What is confirmed and What is still awaiting notification?
Why did the government approve the extension?
The Ministry of Defence states that the decision followed an assessment of the Agnipath Scheme over the previous four years.
The Armed Forces reported positive findings regarding the performance of Agniveers, particularly in physical fitness, discipline, motivation, technical skills and adaptability.
The Government also highlighted improvements in the recruitment process, wider recruitment across districts and opportunities for Agniveers to improve their education and professional skills.
According to the Ministry, the additional engagement period is intended to balance the operational requirements of the Armed Forces with the career aspirations of Agniveers.
What should serving Agniveers check next?
The Cabinet has approved the broad policy change, but the complete service conditions are essential for understanding individual entitlements.
Agniveers and their families should look for official instructions covering the revised salary structure, enhanced Seva Nidhi calculation, seniority rules, marriage conditions, the process for accepting the extension and regular selection requirements after six years.
Until those details are issued, the approved benefits should not be confused with final individual entitlements.
