Operation DRISHTI Ranchi: Army-IAF eye camp offers free surgeries for veterans

Operation DRISHTI has reached Jharkhand with a major military healthcare outreach initiative at Military Hospital Namkum, Ranchi. The fresh update is important for ex-servicemen, serving dependents and underprivileged civilians because the camp is not limited to basic eye screening. It is focused on advanced eye surgeries and specialised ophthalmic treatment.

As per the official PIB release, a specialised ophthalmic team from the Indian Army and Indian Air Force has started a Mega Advanced Surgical Eye Camp in Ranchi from 15 June to 19 June 2026. More than 200 free advanced eye surgeries are planned during the camp.

This makes the Ranchi camp a strong welfare story for defence families because it shows how military medical expertise is reaching people beyond regular hospital boundaries.

What has PIB officially confirmed?

The official release confirms that Operation DRISHTI is being conducted at Military Hospital Namkum, Ranchi. The camp is planned from 15–19 June 2026 and aims to restore vision and improve quality of life for more than 200 beneficiaries through free advanced eye surgeries.

The beneficiaries include ex-servicemen, serving dependents and underprivileged civilians. This is important because the camp is not only for one category. It combines veteran welfare, serving-family support and public healthcare outreach.

The surgical team is led by Brigadier Dr Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Consultant and Head of Department, Ophthalmology, Army Hospital Research & Referral, New Delhi. The procedures include cataract phacoemulsification, Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery and Anti-VEGF intravitreal injections for vitreo-retinal diseases.

Why this eye camp is important for veterans and families?

For an elderly veteran, eyesight is not a small medical issue. It affects movement, independence, medicine management, pension work, reading, travel and daily dignity.

Many ex-servicemen and families live away from major metro hospitals. Even when treatment is available, advanced procedures may require travel, cost, referral support and specialist consultation. A military-led advanced eye camp reduces that gap by bringing expert medical care closer to the people who need it.

For serving dependents also, such camps create confidence that the military healthcare system is not only reactive but also proactive. It identifies the need, mobilises specialists, moves equipment and delivers care where the requirement exists.

That is why Operation DRISHTI Ranchi should be seen as more than a medical camp. It is a welfare mission built around eyesight, dignity and access.

Army and IAF teamwork behind Operation DRISHTI

One of the most important parts of this update is the joint role of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force.

The Army provides the medical base, hospital support and ophthalmic expertise. The IAF supports the mission by airlifting world-class medical equipment to Ranchi through service aircraft. This coordination allows advanced procedures to be performed in a region where many beneficiaries may not otherwise reach such specialised care easily.

This is the quiet strength of the Armed Forces. In war, coordination saves lives on the battlefield. In peace, the same coordination can restore eyesight, confidence and quality of life.

What kind of eye treatments are included?

The Ranchi camp is not only about routine eye check-ups. The official release mentions advanced ophthalmic procedures.

These include cataract surgery through phacoemulsification, glaucoma-related procedures through Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery and Anti-VEGF injections for vitreo-retinal diseases.

For a common reader, this means that the camp is designed for serious eye conditions where specialised treatment is required. Cataract affects vision clarity. Glaucoma can damage eyesight if ignored. Vitreo-retinal diseases can affect the deeper structure of the eye and may need expert intervention.

By offering advanced treatment free of cost, the camp gives many beneficiaries a chance to receive care that may otherwise be delayed due to cost, distance or lack of access.

Why Operation DRISHTI is not just a Ranchi story?

The Ranchi camp is fresh, but Operation DRISHTI as a programme has already been active before. The latest update says that before Ranchi, eight advanced surgical eye camps had been conducted across locations such as Leh, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Bhuj, Kutch and Bagdogra.

This background matters because it shows a pattern. Operation DRISHTI is not a one-time event. It is becoming a structured outreach model where Armed Forces medical expertise is taken to regions that need specialised eye care.

The Ranchi camp is the fresh chapter in that journey.

What should readers not misunderstand?

There are three important clarifications.

First, the official update says more than 200 surgeries are planned. It should not be written as “200 surgeries completed” unless a later official release confirms completion.

Second, Operation DRISHTI is not being launched for the first time. The fresh news is the Ranchi camp in Jharkhand.

Third, the camp is not only for ex-servicemen. It also includes serving dependents and underprivileged civilians.

These points are important because welfare reporting must remain accurate. A strong headline should attract readers, but the article must protect facts.

Why this update fits  ouraudience?

This story directly connects with the our audience because it involves ex-servicemen, military healthcare, serving dependents, Armed Forces Medical Services and public welfare.

Many defence families understand the value of military hospitals, medical camps and specialist access. They also know that health issues after retirement can become difficult when the family is away from big cities or specialised centres.

Operation DRISHTI Ranchi tells a positive story: the Armed Forces are not only guarding borders, they are also extending medical capability to improve everyday lives.

The human side of military medicine

Military medicine is often associated with battlefield injury, emergency evacuation and operational care. But its peacetime role is equally important.

When an ex-serviceman regains vision, he does not only see better. He becomes more independent. When a dependent receives timely treatment, the family burden reduces. When a needy civilian gets advanced surgery free of cost, trust in public institutions grows.

That is the larger meaning of Operation DRISHTI.

The Armed Forces carry discipline into medical service. Planning, movement, equipment, specialists, screening and surgical execution all require coordination. This is where military systems make a difference.

Why advanced eye care matters in smaller regions?

Advanced eye care is often concentrated in large cities. But eye problems do not wait for geography. Veterans and civilians in smaller towns, semi-urban areas and remote regions may suffer silently because treatment feels distant or expensive.

A camp like this bridges the distance between specialist care and the beneficiary.

Ranchi’s Military Hospital Namkum becomes important because it is not only a treatment location. It becomes a centre where Army-IAF teamwork, specialist doctors and welfare outreach meet.

Operation DRISHTI and the dignity of service

For ex-servicemen, healthcare is linked with dignity. After years of service, a veteran should not feel alone in medical difficulty. Welfare does not always mean pension or financial assistance. Sometimes welfare means access, care, respect and timely treatment.

Operation DRISHTI carries that message.

It reminds veterans that their connection with the military system continues beyond active service. It also reminds society that Armed Forces institutions contribute to national life in many ways beyond combat.

Final takeaway

Operation DRISHTI Ranchi is a fresh and meaningful welfare update. From 15–19 June 2026, Army and IAF specialists are conducting an advanced eye surgery camp at Military Hospital Namkum with more than 200 free surgeries planned.

The camp benefits ex-servicemen, serving dependents and underprivileged civilians. It also shows how military healthcare can reach people through planning, specialist skill and inter-service coordination.

For Sainik Welfare News readers, the message is clear: the Armed Forces do not serve the nation only at the border. They also serve through care, compassion and medical outreach.

Operation DRISHTI is not just about restoring eyesight. It is about restoring confidence, independence and dignity.
