The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare has officially reported the resolution of 2,306 long-pending pension grievances under Special Campaign 3, which concluded on 31 August 2026. The Government recorded a 72% redressal rate, and the 10 major success cases specifically highlighted in the official release are connected with Defence pensioners and their families.
Among these cases, payments included ₹37.40 lakh towards family pension difference, ₹30 lakh disability pension arrears, ₹26.12 lakh War Injury Element arrears and ₹25.99 lakh time-barred service pension arrears.
Special Campaign 3: What the Government officially reported
The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare started Special Campaign 3 on 7 July 2026 for the redressal of long-pending pension grievances, claims and related issues.
The campaign concluded on 31 August 2026.
10 Defence pension cases highlighted by the Government
The official release lists the following major cases:
1. ₹16.70 lakh family pension arrears
Family pension arrears of ₹16.70 lakh were released to Ms. Jayalakshmi Karman, a disabled dependent daughter of a Defence pensioner.
The benefit was effective from June 2013.
2. ₹30 lakh disability pension arrears
A Defence pensioner, Shri Idan Singh, received ₹30 lakh towards disability pension arrears.
The benefit was effective from 16 September 2016.
3. ₹26.12 lakh War Injury Element arrears
Defence pensioner Shri Kapur Singh received ₹26.12 lakh as War Injury Element arrears.
The payment was effective from 1 January 2006.
4. ₹19 lakh dual family pension arrears
Ms. Rukmani Nair, spouse of a Defence pensioner, received ₹19 lakh as dual family pension arrears.
The benefit was effective from 24 September 2012.
5. Special Family Pension and ex-gratia payment
Ms. Saranjit Kaur, mother of an Army personnel, received:
- ₹18.57 lakh as Special Family Pension arrears with interest.
- ₹12.60 lakh as outstanding ex-gratia payment.
The Special Family Pension was effective from 28 July 2008.
The two payments together amount to ₹31.17 lakh.
6. ₹6.27 lakh family pension arrears
Ms. Sunaina Kumari, widowed daughter of a Defence pensioner, received pending family pension arrears of ₹6.27 lakh.
The benefit was effective from 18 March 2022.
₹10.66 lakh Liberalised Family Pension arrears
Ms. Simarto, spouse of a Defence pensioner, received ₹10.66 lakh towards arrears of Liberalised Family Pension.
The benefit was effective from 1 January 1996.
₹37.40 lakh difference between Ordinary and Special Family Pension
One of the largest payments highlighted in the Government release was made to Ms. Angoori Devi, spouse of a Defence pensioner.
She received ₹37.40 lakh towards the difference between Ordinary Family Pension and Special Family Pension.
The benefit was effective from 1 January 1996.
₹25.99 lakh time-barred service pension arrears
Defence pensioner Shri Ranjit Singh received ₹25.99 lakh towards time-barred arrears of service pension.
The arrears covered the period from October 2004 to December 2023.
The PIB release confirms the payment but does not explain the detailed circumstances or pension order under which the time-barred arrears were authorised.
₹30.15 lakh family pension arrears
Ms. Koranga Lakshmi, spouse of a Defence pensioner, received ₹30.15 lakh towards family pension arrears.
The arrears covered the period from June 2011 to February 2026.
What these 10 cases show?
The cases also show that some pension grievances had remained unresolved for many years before the arrears were finally released.
Important clarification for Defence pensioners
These payments are individual grievance settlements.
The Government has not announced a new scheme under which every Defence pensioner or family pensioner will automatically receive ₹37.40 lakh, ₹30 lakh or any other amount mentioned in these cases.
The amount payable in each pension case depends upon the individual pension entitlement, effective date, pension category and pending arrears.
The official release confirms the settlement and payment of these particular cases. It does not provide the detailed underlying pension sanction order for every case.
What Defence pensioners should understand?
The most important takeaway from the official release is that long-pending Defence pension disputes can involve different pension categories and substantial arrears.
However, these 10 cases should be treated as individual grievance resolutions, not as a general pension revision applicable to all Defence pensioners.
The Government has confirmed that Special Campaign 3 helped resolve 2,306 of the 3,193 cases taken up, while action continues on the remaining grievances.
