DGR wage rates from 1 April 2026: What ESM security staff should check?

For many ex-servicemen, retirement from the armed forces does not mean retirement from responsibility.

A large number of veterans continue their second innings through security duties, watch and ward services, supervisory roles and DGR-linked employment channels. For them, wage notifications are not just technical documents. They directly affect livelihood, dignity, family planning and the value of disciplined service after uniform.

SWN 01 (1)

That is why the DGR revised wage notification effective from 1 April 2026 deserves careful attention.

The Directorate General Resettlement, under the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare, Ministry of Defence, has listed the revised wage notification on its official website under the Wage Notifications and Advisories section. This update is important for ex-servicemen security staff, DGR-sponsored security agencies, ESM corporations and principal employers using DGR-linked security services.

But this subject must be understood correctly.

This is not a simple “salary hike for every security guard” story. It is a wage-awareness issue connected with DGR-sponsored security agencies, watch and ward duties, area classification, duty type, statutory components and tender quotation benchmarks.

Why this notification matters for ex-servicemen?

Many ex-servicemen work in security jobs after retirement because the role matches their training, discipline and sense of duty. A veteran understands alertness, entry control, duty discipline, reporting procedure, emergency response and responsibility better than most ordinary security workers.

But a common problem is awareness.

Many security staff may know their monthly payment, but may not know how it is calculated. Some may not know whether their duty location falls in Area A or Area B. Some may not know the difference between armed and unarmed duty rates. Some may not know which components are part of wage calculation and which deductions or benefits apply.

This is where the DGR wage notification becomes useful.

It gives a formal reference point for DGR-sponsored security agencies and corporations while quoting rates for watch and ward duties to principal employers.

In simple words, it helps create a wage benchmark within the DGR security agency system.

What does the DGR wage notification cover?

The revised DGR wage notification is effective from 1 April 2026. It deals with minimum wage rates for watch and ward duties.

The notification refers to one watch of 8 hours. This detail is very important because many people may wrongly assume that the number shown is automatically a full monthly salary. It is not to be read that way without understanding duty days, number of watches, rest days, reliever arrangements, statutory components and contract conditions.

The notification also separates rates by duty type and area category.

For example, the wage structure differs for:

Security guard without arms
Security guard with arms
Supervisor

It also differs by area classification such as Area A and Area B.

This is why ex-servicemen security staff should not depend only on forwarded screenshots or half information. The official PDF must be checked properly.

Why Area A and Area B matter?

Area classification is one of the most important parts of wage understanding.

A security guard working in one city may not have the same rate as a guard working in another area. The wage notification classifies locations and applies different wage structures accordingly.

This means a veteran should first check where his duty location falls.

If he is posted at a PSU, government establishment, industrial site, defence-linked facility or any principal employer location, he should check whether that location is covered under Area A or Area B in the official notification.

Without checking the area category, comparing wages with another guard in another city can create confusion.

A veteran working in one location may say, “Why is my rate different from another person?” The answer may lie in the official area classification, duty type and contract structure.

Armed duty and unarmed duty are not the same

Another important point is the difference between security guard without arms and security guard with arms.

The DGR wage table gives separate wage references for these categories. This difference matters because armed duty carries additional responsibility, licensing requirements, safety expectations and duty conditions.

An ex-serviceman must therefore know how his duty is recorded.

Is he deployed as an unarmed security guard?

Is he deployed as an armed security guard?

Is he working as a supervisor?

The answer affects wage understanding.

Many veterans may do responsible work but may not know the category under which they are officially deployed. That should be checked through the agency, contract papers or duty appointment terms.

Why the 8-hour watch wording is important?

The phrase “one watch of 8 hours” should not be ignored.

Security jobs often involve different duty patterns. Some sites may have rotational duties. Some may have 8-hour shifts. Some may involve relievers. Some may have local arrangements depending on contract terms.

The DGR wage notification should therefore be read in the context of one watch of 8 hours, not blindly converted into a monthly amount without understanding the exact duty schedule.

For ex-servicemen, this is an important awareness point.

Before comparing monthly payment, check:

How many duties are being counted?
Is the duty 8 hours or longer?
Are rest days included?
Are reliever charges considered?
Are statutory deductions shown?
Are allowances included separately?
Is the employer DGR-sponsored or private?
Is the duty armed or unarmed?
Is the location Area A or Area B?

This checklist can prevent misunderstanding.

Wage is not only basic amount

Many workers only look at the first wage number. But the full wage structure may include several components.

The DGR wage notification includes components such as Basic Wage plus VDA, HRA, EPF, ESI or medical allowance, EDLI, bonus, uniform-related allowances, washing allowance, additional or field allowance, service charge and GST where applicable.

This means the full calculation is not only one line.

A veteran should understand whether the amount being discussed is Basic Wage plus VDA or the total cost to principal employer. There can be a difference between the gross billing amount, statutory components, agency service charge and actual take-home pay.

This is where many confusions happen.

A forwarded message may show a higher figure and the worker may assume that this full number is take-home salary. That may not be correct. Some components are statutory contributions or part of the billing structure, not always direct cash in hand.

So the safest approach is to ask for a proper wage breakup.

Why principal employers should also check this?

This notification is not only useful for security staff. It is also important for principal employers.

PSUs, government organisations, institutions and other principal employers using DGR-sponsored security services should ensure that quotations and contracts follow the latest DGR wage notification.

If a principal employer accepts a low quotation without checking the official wage notification, the impact may ultimately fall on the ex-servicemen deployed at the site.

That is why wage transparency matters.

The objective should be fair employment, correct tendering and respect for the service value of ex-servicemen.

Why veterans should avoid WhatsApp-only information?

Wage notifications are often shared on WhatsApp groups, but forwarded copies can be incomplete, unclear, old or cropped.

A veteran should not rely only on a screenshot.

The official DGR website should be checked. The revised wage notification PDF should be downloaded. If there is doubt, the security agency, ESM corporation, principal employer or DGR-related channel should be consulted.

This is especially important because older wage notifications are also available on the same DGR page. A person may accidentally refer to an older notification and make the wrong calculation.

The effective date matters.

For this update, the relevant notification is effective from 1 April 2026.

What should ex-servicemen security staff check?

Every ex-serviceman working through DGR-linked security services should check these points:

Whether the agency is DGR-sponsored or not.

Whether the duty is watch and ward duty.

Whether the post is security guard without arms, security guard with arms or supervisor.

Whether the duty location falls in Area A or Area B.

Whether the calculation is for one 8-hour watch.

Whether HRA, EPF, ESI, EDLI, bonus, uniform allowance and other components are shown separately.

Whether the wage breakup is available in writing.

Whether the contract follows the latest notification effective from 1 April 2026.

Whether deductions are explained clearly.

Whether the worker is being given correct statutory benefits.

These questions are practical, not confrontational. A veteran has the right to understand how his wage is being calculated.

Why this topic is important?

Ex-servicemen welfare is not only about pension. It is also about dignified second careers.

After retirement, many veterans look for stable income. Security work through DGR-sponsored agencies is one important route for them. If wage awareness is weak, veterans may accept less than what the latest structure indicates or may misunderstand their entitlement.

A clear wage guide helps families too.

The spouse may want to know the monthly income. The children may depend on that income for education. Medical expenses, rent, loan repayment and household responsibilities all depend on predictable earnings.

For many veterans, the security job is not just a job. It is the bridge between military retirement and civilian stability.

That is why the DGR wage notification should be read carefully.

This is not a guaranteed salary claim

One caution is necessary.

The revised DGR wage notification should not be presented as a guarantee that every ex-serviceman security guard in India will automatically receive the same amount.

The notification is connected with DGR-sponsored security agencies and corporations for watch and ward duties. Actual payment depends on the applicable contract, location, duty type, statutory components, deductions and other terms.

So the right message is not “salary confirmed for everyone.”

The right message is:

Ex-servicemen security staff working through DGR-linked arrangements should check the latest official wage notification and compare it with their duty type, area category and wage breakup.

This is the responsible way to use the information.

Final takeaway

The DGR revised wage notification effective from 1 April 2026 is a practical and important update for ex-servicemen security staff.

It matters because it gives a formal wage reference for DGR-sponsored security agencies and corporations while dealing with watch and ward duties.

For veterans, the most important lesson is simple: do not look only at the final payment figure. Understand the wage structure.

Check the official notification.

Check Area A or Area B.

Check armed or unarmed duty.

Check whether the duty is for one 8-hour watch.

Check statutory components.

Check the wage breakup in writing.

For ex-servicemen, dignity after retirement also means wage awareness. A veteran who has served the nation should not have to depend on half information, forwarded messages or unclear calculations.

The official DGR wage notification gives a starting point. Veterans, agencies and principal employers should use it correctly.
