Banking and UPI Cyberattack threats in India: SBI data exposure, PNB fraud and ₹5 lakh deposit insurance explained

Are your bank deposits safe? Recent cybersecurity incidents, allegations of missing money from Punjab National Bank (PNB) accounts and concerns about artificial intelligence being used in cyberattacks have raised important questions about the security of India’s banking system.

For Central Government employees, defence pensioners, ex-servicemen and senior citizens, protecting retirement savings and pension accounts is particularly important.

However, cybersecurity threats, temporary UPI failures and bank failures are three different situations. None of the recent incidents establishes that India’s banking system or UPI network is about to shut down.

PM Modi warns against cyberattacks on India’s Banking System

On 25 October 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

During his address, the Prime Minister emphasised that economic systems can become targets of modern conflicts and highlighted the importance of protecting banking infrastructure against cybercriminals and cyberterrorists.

The new RBI facilities are intended to strengthen digital infrastructure and cybersecurity capabilities.

The statement reflects the growing importance of banking security. It was not an announcement of an impending banking shutdown.

SBI Customer Data exposure and PNB fraud allegations

Recent incidents have brought customer-data protection and internal banking controls into focus.

SBI customer information: Reports have described the exposure of information linked to approximately 3,900 State Bank of India customers. The incident highlights the risks associated with compromised personal and financial information.

However, an exposure of customer data does not automatically establish that money was withdrawn from every affected account.

PNB Greater Noida case: Customers of Punjab National Bank’s Aichchhar branch alleged that substantial sums had disappeared from savings accounts and fixed deposits.

One customer reported that approximately ₹1.18 crore was missing from an account containing compensation received for land acquisition.

By 28–30 October, reports described alleged irregularities potentially involving ₹35 crore. The FIR initially documented a smaller amount, while police continued investigating additional complaints.

Several bank employees, including the branch manager, were reportedly suspended, and investigations were initiated.

The allegations must not be presented as final findings of guilt or proof that PNB accounts nationwide are unsafe.

Cyberattacks on Financial Institutions: How serious is the threat?

Cybercriminals increasingly target digital banking infrastructure, payment interfaces, stolen credentials and third-party service providers.

Recent reporting has described attacks involving financial institutions and payment APIs, including attempts to initiate unauthorised transfers.

On 30 October 2026, Reuters reported that RBI was intensifying cybersecurity scrutiny of lenders following multiple incidents, including concerns about API security, third-party service providers and preparedness for AI-related threats.

This demonstrates the need for stronger cybersecurity controls, but attacks on individual institutions do not establish a nationwide banking failure.

Artificial Intelligence is increasing Cyberattack Speed

A Microsoft Security investigation published on 21 October 2026 described the misuse of an AI-assisted security framework called ARTEX by threat actors.

Microsoft observed a campaign involving more than 151,000 failed sign-in attempts, reaching a peak of approximately 2,900 failed attempts per minute.

The campaign also involved attempts to access thousands of organisational environments.

These findings illustrate how automated tools can accelerate cyberattacks. They do not mean that 2,900 bank accounts were successfully breached every minute.

Global Economic Risks: Could they affect Indian Banking?

International tensions and financial-market volatility create additional economic uncertainty.

The Strait of Hormuz is a particularly important energy-supply route. According to the US Energy Information Administration, petroleum flows through the strait in the first half of 2025 were equivalent to approximately 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption.

Major disruption to this route could influence oil prices, transportation costs and inflation.

Similarly, emergency-preparedness advice issued by governments, including the United Kingdom, encourages households to maintain essential supplies for possible disruptions.

However, general emergency planning should not be interpreted as evidence that banks will close or that a financial crisis has been officially predicted.

Is Your Money Safe in a Bank? Understanding DICGC ₹5 Lakh Insurance

India provides deposit insurance through the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of India.

Eligible deposits are insured up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per insured bank, including principal and interest, subject to applicable conditions.

Important: DICGC insurance applies under specified bank-failure or regulatory circumstances. It is not a general guarantee against cyber fraud.

Deposits exceeding ₹5 lakh are not insured beyond the applicable limit, although additional recovery may still be possible through the relevant bank-resolution or liquidation process.

What happens if money is withdrawn without your permission?

RBI’s customer-protection framework provides rules for liability arising from unauthorised electronic banking transactions.

These protections depend on the circumstances and applicable regulations. A disputed transaction does not automatically qualify for reimbursement without examination.

Customers should inform their bank immediately after discovering an unauthorised transaction.

If a banking transaction is disputed, preserve account statements, screenshots, transaction references and complaint acknowledgement numbers.

Will Banking Services or UPI Shut Down in India?

There is an important difference between a temporary service disruption, unauthorised account transactions and a bank’s financial failure.

A UPI transaction failure may result from technical issues, network interruptions or payment-system disruptions. It does not necessarily mean the customer’s deposits are missing.

Similarly, an alleged fraud at a particular bank branch does not demonstrate that the banking system as a whole is collapsing.

No verified nationwide government announcement has been identified declaring an impending shutdown of Indian banks or UPI services.

Editorial clarification: Reported bank fraud and customer-data incidents are distinguished from established regulatory provisions. Allegations, investigations and cybersecurity risks do not by themselves demonstrate that nationwide banking or UPI services are about to shut down.
