Flydubai FZ1073 Attack: How Captain Smit Machchhar’s courage helped stop a planned terror attack?

Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is being praised internationally after his actions during the serious security incident aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 helped protect passengers despite the Captain himself suffering severe injuries.

The flight was travelling from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv on 30 September 2026 when a security incident developed inside the flight deck. Flydubai later confirmed that the aircraft was diverted and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, with all passengers accounted for. What initially emerged simply as an in-flight security incident has since taken a far more serious turn: the UAE Attorney-General says investigators have uncovered a premeditated terrorist plot to seize the aircraft and use it in a suicide attack against the passenger terminal at Ben Gurion Airport.

What happened aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073?

On 30 September, FZ1073 was operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an emergency developed during the flight.

Flydubai’s first official statement did not speculate about the cause. It confirmed that the aircraft had experienced an incident while en route, had been diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, and had landed safely.

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority subsequently described it as a security incident and confirmed that some crew members were injured. At that stage, authorities specifically asked the public not to circulate unverified information while the investigation was continuing.

Within days, however, the investigation provided a much clearer picture.

UAE investigation says Captain was attacked with a crash axe

The UAE Attorney-General later announced that the aircraft’s co-pilot had attempted to carry out what investigators described as a terrorist act.

According to the UAE authorities, the co-pilot attacked Captain Smit Machchhar inside the flight deck using a crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft’s controls.

This is an important correction to some early accounts that described the weapon simply as a knife or referred generally to a stabbing.

The latest official UAE investigation provides the more specific description: a crash axe was used in the cockpit attack.

How did Captain Smit Machchhar respond?

Despite sustaining serious injuries, Captain Machchhar continued to act during an exceptionally dangerous situation.

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority has officially praised Captain Machchhar, the crew and passengers who assisted in bringing the situation under control, saying their rapid and decisive response helped prevent more serious consequences.

The incident therefore cannot be viewed as the achievement of one individual alone. Captain Machchhar’s actions were central, but crew members and passengers who intervened also played an important role in containing the situation.

Once control of the emergency was established, the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk and landed safely.

The latest investigation reveals a far more serious alleged plan

The most significant development came on 9 October 2026.

UAE Attorney-General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi announced that the investigation had found that the 29-year-old Omani co-pilot had allegedly prepared the attack in advance.

According to the official UAE statement, investigators say the intention was to:

seize control of FZ1073 and use the aircraft in a suicide attack against the passenger terminal at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, with the objective of causing maximum casualties.

This changes the context of the incident considerably.

What first appeared publicly as an extraordinary cockpit assault is now being investigated by UAE authorities as a premeditated terrorist plot involving a commercial passenger aircraft.

The investigation remains important, however, and the findings should still be attributed to the investigating authorities rather than presented as a final judicial determination.

Was it really a ‘9/11-like’ attack?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi used that comparison while publicly praising Captain Machchhar.

On 1 October, the Prime Minister said that Captain Machchhar had demonstrated extraordinary courage and had helped prevent “another 9/11-like attack”.

That description should therefore be understood as the Prime Minister’s characterization of the seriousness of the incident.

The subsequent UAE investigation has separately stated that the co-pilot intended to seize the aircraft and deliberately crash it into an airport passenger terminal.

PM Modi calls Captain Smit Machchhar a ‘HERO’

Captain Machchhar’s actions drew praise from the highest level in India.

On 1 October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a “HERO”, stating that despite being seriously injured, he showed courage and an unwavering determination to protect other lives.

The Prime Minister said his actions helped save hundreds of people and avert a major tragedy.

A day later, on 2 October, PM Modi spoke directly with Captain Machchhar through a video call.

During the interaction, the Prime Minister asked about his health and praised his courage, patience and presence of mind, particularly the decisions he took in a matter of seconds during the emergency.

Captain Machchhar was not the only person who showed courage

One point should not be lost amid the attention surrounding the Indian Captain.

The UAE aviation regulator has also publicly recognised the role played by:

  • the flight crew;
  • passengers who helped bring the situation under control;
  • and those involved in securing the aircraft after the cockpit emergency.

The GCAA said the response demonstrated cooperation and shared responsibility during an exceptional emergency.

That makes this not only the story of one pilot’s bravery, but also of coordinated action during an aviation emergency in which seconds mattered.

NIA has now registered a case in India

The incident has also entered the Indian national-security investigation framework.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered case RC-34/2026/NIA/DLI.

The NIA’s official case description states that an Omani first officer aboard flydubai Flight 1073, piloted by Indian national Captain Smit Machchhar, attacked the Captain in an apparent attempt to hijack or cause the aircraft to crash.

The Indian investigation adds another layer to a case already involving authorities in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Israel.

What is confirmed and what still requires investigation?

Several important facts are now supported by official statements.

Confirmed by official authorities:

  • FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on 30 September 2026.
  • A serious security incident occurred during the flight.
  • The aircraft diverted and landed safely at Tabuk Airport, Saudi Arabia.
  • Captain Smit Machchhar suffered serious injuries.
  • UAE investigators say the co-pilot attacked him with a crash axe.
  • UAE authorities describe the incident as an attempted terrorist act.
  • The latest UAE investigation says the alleged plan was to seize the aircraft and target the passenger terminal at Ben Gurion Airport.
  • The NIA has registered an investigation in India.

At the same time, questions regarding any wider network, outside assistance or additional links should not be answered through speculation. UAE investigators have continued examining the circumstances and connections surrounding the incident.

Why Captain Smit Machchhar’s story stands out?

Commercial pilots train extensively for technical failures, weather emergencies and abnormal situations. A violent attack from inside the flight deck creates an entirely different type of crisis.

Captain Machchhar was not dealing only with an aircraft emergency. According to the authorities investigating the case, he was facing an attack from the person sitting beside him while responsible for the safety of everyone aboard.

Even after being badly injured, his actions contributed to creating the opportunity for others to intervene and for the crisis to be contained.

That is why official institutions in India and the UAE have focused not merely on the eventual safe landing, but on his courage, judgement and presence of mind under extreme pressure. WAM

The investigation will determine the complete legal and security picture surrounding FZ1073.

But one fact is already clear from the official record: Captain Smit Machchhar, together with the crew and passengers who intervened, helped prevent an extraordinary in-flight emergency from becoming a far greater tragedy.
